A-One’s thoughts on Engineering Ranking
Today’s post is about Engineering, a field that many Korean students love and choose to study. If you finish your undergraduate studies and decide to go to graduate school, we will take some time to discuss the criteria for deciding whether to go to graduate school, how to choose a professor’s lab for graduate school, and the actual Engineering university ranking that A-One Institute thinks.
How long should you study for an Engineering major?
If you want to start your social life early and start earning money quickly after majoring in Engineering, a Bachelor’s degree, Undergraduate might be enough. However, most Engineering students go to Graduate School. Especially if you want to become a professor later, you should obviously go to graduate school, and if you want to do a startup properly, it seems right to experience graduate school. Even if you get a job, if you want to go to a high-ranking position with influence, we recommend going to graduate school! Even if you do not go to graduate school, if you learn and experience a lot in the field after joining the company, there are many things that can be overcome, but the fact is that there are many things that need to be found out through abundant research because the engineering field is a “technology-intensive” industry, unlike the previous era. Even if you set up a startup company with engineering, there are many cases where you return to school after operating for several years, and there are many cases where you return to school to do research even while working at a company. Therefore, if you are thinking about a startup related to Engineering or a high-ranking company employee, it is necessary to experience research in graduate school.
Impact Factor (IF)
• Journal
Journal refers to the book where the paper is published. The value of a paper can be evaluated depending on which journal the paper, researched a specific technology and concept experimented with, and then wrote the paper, is published. The most prestigious journal is probably Science and Nature. There are many reasons why it is important to be published in a prestigious journal from various fields. There is something called Impact Factor, which is a term that evaluates how much a paper has been cited. In other words, a paper that is cited a lot, the journal that the paper is published in is a good journal, and the higher the Impact Factor, the better the paper.
The criteria for calculating the Impact Factor vary by field, so the scores may vary, but the Impact Factor organized from the general criteria is as shown in the image above. There are many different journals, and you can see the Nature Journal with a high Impact Factor of 42 points, but it would be good to refer to the fact that the scores are different by field. There is a way to judge what a good graduate student is based on this table, and first of all, a student who publishes a paper in a Journal with a high Impact Factor is a great graduate student. But here’s the distinction: if you write 20 papers in a journal with an Impact Factor of 1 point, and if you write one paper in a journal with an Impact Factor of 20 points, which student is a better graduate student? The two had a total score of 20 points. The difference between 20 papers of 1 point and 1 paper of 20 points is the same in terms of total score, but in fact, there is a difference between heaven and earth. A student with one paper of 20 points becomes a better graduate student. Most of the professors who are in charge of the Lab of each university have to fill in the Impact Factor score, so they cannot be lazy in their research.
How to judge a student who can do well only by graduating from college? Are you worried about how to judge a student who can do well even after graduating from college? I’ll tell you! If you read a paper of 5-20 pages of letter paper corresponding to a journal with an Impact Factor of 9-10, if you read the style paper and understand more than 70% of the paper content within 2 weeks, even if you graduate with only a bachelor’s degree and enter society, you can do your job excellently.
You can judge that you are a student. Because when college students or graduate students read papers, they start reading from the abstract and look up the concept when they come across something they don’t know. But unfortunately, it’s hard to find these concepts by googling. Engineering research is not a concept that can be easily found, and you have to read reference papers or other papers to understand a little, so to fully understand one paper, you end up reading about 20 papers. It’s not easy for a student to understand more than 70% of a paper in two weeks! If there is a student who has done this, there is a possibility that he can perform research well if he goes to graduate school, and even if he does not go to graduate school, he will do well in research while performing his own work.
In fact, as technology becomes more advanced, it is true that there is difficulty in acquiring knowledge with only four years of undergraduate. Therefore, the next course after undergraduate will be graduate school. If you decide to go to graduate school, the most important part is the professor who will guide the research!
The professor’s type can be divided into three main types.
• Scholar type A professor with a scholarly appearance that is traditionally thought of!
• Entrepreneur type Entrepreneur type professor who actually connects with companies conducts research and also brings in research funds!
• Politician type A politician-type professor who takes care of the conference or event and cares about political parts!
When going to graduate school, the professor’s disposition should also match well with the student, and it is important to apply to the Lab of the professor who seems to match well with you. It’s not that you’re working entirely with that professor when you go to graduate school, but because you work closely like a company employee, the professor can’t help but influence your studies. Therefore, the choice of the research field and the advisor professor in charge of that field is very important!!!
A One Institute’s Thoughts on Engineering Ranking Finally, we have the ranking for the Engineering major. I will share with you the actual Engineering ranking as perceived by A-One Institute. This ranking, unlike US News or Forbes, is newly calculated based on our own criteria: 1) the annual salary of graduates, 2) the academic reputation of the school, and 3) the difficulty of entering the major. It would be good to refer to this when looking at it.

The reason why there may be a difference from the US News ranking you always see is that we thought that the graduate’s salary was the most influential criterion. The surprising point may be that the ranking of Georgia Institute of Technology is very high, but the ranking had to be high because the salary of the graduates was very high. Among our institute students, those who are slightly lacking to go to Ivy League, that is, students who study ambiguously well, apply to and enter Georgia Tech a lot.
