What EC extracurricular activity should I do?

Today, I will be posting about one of the important factors for admission to American universities, Extracurricular activities. Among the very diverse and wide range of EC activities, today I will focus on introducing one activity.

EC Activities in Medical Healthcare

In American college admissions, not only are Extracurricular Activities important, but GPA, Standardized Test, and Essay also hold a lot of weight. However, many people are curious about extracurricular activities, EC activities, so today I will introduce the EC that students who are particularly interested in the Medical Healthcare field do.

HOSA Basic Information

I will introduce you to the EC related to the Medical Healthcare field that many upper-middle-tier students are interested in, HOSA. The official name of HOSA is HOSA Future Health Professionals.

• Purpose of establishing HOSA Cultivating global talents in the medical health field. Aims to help students interested in the medical health field gain practical experience and build related knowledge. This is how you can summarize HOSA.

• Established: 1976

• Number of members: 260,000

• Chapter (number of clubs per region, i.e., one chapter per school) - 5000 (large scale)

• Eligibility - Middle school / High school / Graduates and College students (divided into 3 Divisions) - In other words, if you are a middle school student or above, you meet the eligibility requirements.

HOSA has an association that oversees the entire organization, There is a State Association on a state-by-state basis, And below that, there is a Local Chapter (School). Local Chapters can be a school, an educational institution, or a club. Of course, students will mainly be in schools. There are several Chapters at various levels. If there is no HOSA-related organization in the high school you are attending, I recommend creating one. If you can recruit more than 5 members by consulting with the school teacher, anyone can try to create one. If you look at the names of the states where HOSA exists in the image above, you can see that HOSA exists in almost all states.

HOSA Partnership

Let’s learn more about HOSA. There is an association called ACTE Association for Career & Technical Education, which is one of the education associations in the United States. There is a department called HSE Health Science Education within the ACTE education association, and HOSA has formed a partnership with HSE. HSE is a gathering of people who educate students who will form a community in the medical health field in the future. In other words, the members are school teachers and professors. If the teacher in charge of HOSA in the school is a member of HSE, it is best. Think of HOSA as being connected to a department within a large education association rather than a national organization. PLTW Project Lead The Way is an educational institution that creates STEM-related curricula and allows you to complete related education.

HOSA is making efforts to enter the official curriculum by forming a partnership with this institution. If you go to the HOSA homepage and look at what HOSA is pursuing, you can find that HOSA is constantly striving to enter the official curriculum in conjunction with the school’s core curriculum. You can see that it is becoming a prestigious club that is gaining more and more contributions as it actively forms partnerships, and it is becoming a club with a high reputation. It would be good to know that once you join HOSA at the school level, you automatically join at the State/International level.

HOSA Activities

If you look at the activities of HOSA, you will find that you can do very diverse and deep activities. When you join as a HOSA member, you participate in local chapter meetings/local committee meetings at the local level, and you also participate in leadership meetings and conferences that HOSA considers important. Although it is true that there are many and diverse activities, if the student and the teacher inside the chapter consult well, you can pull out enough HOSA activities without causing much interference with other activities.

HOSA Competition

As you can see from the phrase “review the competitive events and workshop in which members can participate” in HOSA activities, there is competition within the activities. There are about 72 competitions within HOSA. As you can see from the image above, there are very diverse competitions.

There are many diverse competitions within HOSA, such as CPR/First Aid/Creative Problem Solving/Clinical Laboratory Science. HOSA’s Competition selects participants who have a certain level of qualifications from the Regional competition, compete at the State/National level, and then win. Among the various competitive events, some events compete regardless of the division. It may be burdensome to compete with divisions of different ages and grades, but in fact, even if you compete together, the judging is done separately by division, so you don’t need to worry too much. One peculiar point among HOSA’s competitive events is that there is a dress code.

You need to check the announcements for each event well because you need to have the required dress code to avoid deductions. Although it is not possible to know exactly how many extra points HOSA activities have in the overall college admissions, students who have done this activity at our academy have been admitted to Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University. Of course, it may be difficult to say that they were admitted only by this activity, but I think HOSA would have been somewhat helpful.
